Best Practices: IPv6 Transition
Deploying IPv6: Gateway To the Next-Gen Internet
When the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), the top-level address management agency, allocated the last of its address pool to the five worldwide Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) on February 3, the clock started ticking in earnest. We expect the RIRs to use up those last addresses by late summer. So what then?
As we’ll discuss, you can’t know exactly how IPv4 address depletion will harm your business—or how an IPv6 deployment can help it—until you do some analysis. But every company that depends on the Internet should have a migration plan in place based on industry best practices. In this report, we’ll do four things. First, we’ll help you lay out a business justification by explaining how some providers’ workarounds—solutions entirely out of your control—can cost you customers. Then, we’ll detail four steps you should take now to lay the foundation for IPv6 and discuss five fundamental things to think about as you make your plans. We’ll end with a trio of case studies demonstrating practical IPv6 deployments, with tailored recommendations. (B2540211)
