If your IT group has lost its innovation mojo, focusing on the intersection of big data and in-memory analytics and databases is a good bet to get it back. Serious changes are on the horizon: Databases and data warehouses as we know them, with their spinning disks and related I/O overhead, are not the future. Big data analytics and the database management systems supporting next-generation, low-latency transactional systems demand a new in-memory approach. But questions remain about cost, use cases and synergies with existing technologies such as Hadoop, NoSQL, caching, stream computing and grids.
