How do you feel about your team’s project portfolio? Enthusiastic? Will some initiatives save the company money along the way? How about all of them?

IT teams need to temper their excitement and strike a smart balance between ­innovation and maintenance and between technical and business priorities. ­Consider the spread between security and social media. Clearly, we must spend on both, yet security remains No. 1 on our respondents’ list of priorities, with enterprise social media dead last—or in the case of Facebook or Twitter integration, not ­mentioned at all. And we’re focused on operational concerns to the exclusion of transformative technologies. That’s no way to get your business ahead.
